12-year-old Misaki Suzuhara has just gotten involved in Angelic Layer, a battling game using electronic dolls called angels. Even as a newbie, Misaki shows advanced skills as she meets new friends and enters Angelic Layer tournaments to fight the greatest Angelic Layer champions of the nation.

Misaki is the main character of the series. She is a very kind and caring girl who understands her friends in any situation. She can make friends easily with her cheerful and bright personality. Misaki has the unusual ability to copy moves she sees only once perfectly and use them in the tournaments she comes on. Though Misaki is undoubtedly lacking skills in physical activities and sports, she can cook very well and has a very sharp mind, which comes handy and useful in the Angelic Layer Tournaments.
Hatoko Kobayashi

Angel: Suzuka
Hatoko is the best friend of Misaki and the younger sister of Koutarou. She is known as the "Miracle Kidnergartner" for being an Angelic Layer winner despite her young age of 5. Her angel is known as "Light Speed Suzuka" for being a fast angel known to be on par only with a few notable angels.
Kaede Saitou

Angel: Blanche
Kaede a kind and soft-spoken character who is a good friend of Sai. She will always fight fairly even if it means her loss and she treats her angel, Blanche, as her own daughter.
Arisu Fujisaki

Angel: Alice (Arisu)
Arisu is the sister of Madoka. Usually she designs angels for her sister. But she comes now to the layer as a competitor herself with her own angel she desigend herself.
Sai Jounouchi

Angel: Shirahime
Sai is a friend of Kaede. She is an observant, silent and wise player known as the "Ice Machine" with her angel Shirahime.
Koutarou Kobayashi
Seiyu: Jun Fukuyama
Koutarou is Hatoko's brother. As talented in Angelic Layer his sister may be, Koutarou doesn't play the game and usually acts as a supporter or cheerer for both his sister and Misaki. He is also the best friend of Tamayo and classmates with her and Misaki. He studies Karate.
Ringo Seto

Angel: Ranga
Ringo is a spirited, energetic and supportive pop idol who plays Angelic Layer to escape from work and continuous orders of her manager.
Shuko Suzuhara

Angel: Athena
Shuko is the mother of Misaki. She is a three-time champion in Angelic Layer and has helped in the development and progress of the game. Her angel Athena may be known as the "White Angel"
Shouko Asami
Seiyu: Kotono Mitsuishi
Shouko is the sister of Shuko and the aunt of Misaki. She doesn't play Angelic Layer.
Ichiro Mihara
Seiyu: Masaya Onosaka
"The Father of Angelic Layer" He is the brother of Ohjirou. He may be known as "Icchan."
Tamayo Kizaki
Seiyu: Satsuki Yukino
Tamayo is the best friend of Koutarou and a good friend and supporter of Misaki. She is the one to give Misaki the nickname, "Misakichi." She doesn't play Angelic Layer but she loves Wrestling and Martial Arts.
Ohjirou Mihara
Seiyu: Soichiro Hoshi
Angel: Wizard
The brother of Ichiro.. He is known as the "Prince of Angelic Layer" and with his good looks and his adept skills at the game, he is popular with the females but never had the chance to have a girlfriend due to some events in his childhood.
Madoka Fujisaki
Seiyu: Tomoko Kawakami
Angel: Mao
Madoka is the sister of Arisu.
