[edit] Plot Summary

Kenzou Tenma is an outstanding Japanese brain surgeon who works and lives in Germany. Being praised for his work and engaged to the daughter of the hospital's director, it's apparent that his future looks bright. However, after witnessing the disillusional policies of the hospital, he decides to treat a little boy who was shot in the head, instead of treating a mayor and thus manages to save the boy while the mayor dies. This commences his downfall at the hospital; he's shunned by the hospital's director and his colleagues, his fiancé turns her back on him. While the case of the little boy draws public attention to the hospital, Tenma is being replaced by other doctors who take over his case. Strangely, the director and the doctors who took Tenma's place are murdered soon after and while Tenma regains his position at the hospital through this, of course he is the main suspect of the murders. Desperate to clear his name, Tenma investigates the recent murders on his own, soon enough finding out that there is a dark secret behind the boy Johann, whose life he has saved and a chain of murders throughout Germany.

(Spoiler Warning)

Kenzou Tenma
Kenzou Tenma
Kenzou Tenma is a brilliant neurosurgeon and kind at heart. He truly is a good person, always willing to help other people and blessing people with his kindness. However, saving the monster Johann destroys his life and he, only being used to save people, has to change himself in order to be able to kill the one person who commits countless murders.
Johann Liebert
Johann Liebert
Johann Liebert is the monster with no name. Though having angelic features and making a humble, gentle and rather inconspicuous impression, he is a person of great charisma and manipulative skills. His influence is absolutely destructive and though many organizations, such as right wing extremists hope for him to become their leader, he has no intention to ally with anyone.
Anna Liebert
Anna Liebert
Anna Liebert is Johann's twin sister. She was the one who shot Johann in the head when they were still children, once she became aware of the monster inside of him. But Tenma saved Johann's life and after fleeing from the hospital, Johann leaves her with foster parents, while continuing to carry out his plans. She, having lost her memories, grows up believing her name is Nina Fortner and that her foster parents are her real parents. By the time Johann comes to fetch her, Tenma has traced Anna to her current location and rescues her. However, after she regains her memory, she too sets out to find Johann.

Dr. Reichwein is a kind-hearted psychologist who coached an ex-alcoholic police officer that was killed by Johann. He's said to be able to tell a criminal from an innocent person, just by looking at their face. After meeting Tenma and learning about Johann, he decides to help Tenma prove his innocence. He ends up taking care of Dieter as Tenma faces danger more and more often.

Dieter, a young boy, is one of the many aquintances that Tenma makes during his journeys. However, having been abused by his foster parent, a former employee of Kinderheim 511, and saved by Tenma, he refuses to leave his side from now on. Inspite of his mistreatment, Dieter is a thouroughly good and helpful boy.

Wolfgang Grimmer is a freelance journalist, investigating the history of Kinderheim 511. The same children's home Johann was taken care of when he was a child. While at first glance he just seems to be a person good-natured enough to be taken advantage of, it turns out that his interest for Kinderheim 511 is more than journalistic. He too, immidiately believes in Tenma's innocence.

Eva Heinemann is Tenma's spoiled ex-fiancé. Never having been refused anything in life, she can't deal with both the death of her father, the hospital's director, and Tenma's refusal to get back together with her. Eventually, she becomes alocoholic and blames Tenma for her downfall.

Inspektor Runge is a true monomaniac. After deducing that Tenma is a schizophreniac whose second personality is Johann and thus is the murderer, his mind only revolves around proving Tenma's guilt. Eventually, his neglected family leaves him, which makes him free to follow Tenma's every step from now on.
