W marks the first SRW game (outside of the Original Generation sub-series) to feature no machines from any series produced before 1980. Only characters from Getter Robo G appear, piloting Shin Getter Robo. This game also marks the second Super Robot Wars game NOT to feature any Universal Century Gundam series, the first of which being SRW J (Judgement.) It's also the first SRW game which features no series produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino.
[edit] Gameplay
At its base, Super Robot Wars W's gameplay is the same as in the rest of the series. Missions are made up of an introductory dialogue segment that sets up the story for the current mission, and ties it into other, previous missions. From there, the game goes to a top-down map. The map uses icons to represent various units, with allied units in blue and enemies in red.
Unlike previous SRW's, the interface has been changed slightly to make use of the DS's dual screens. While the player may still use the directional pad and buttons to move around the map, select units, and make commands, the game allows for the use of the touch screen stylus instead. The mini-map feature in previous SRW's is now a fixture on the DS's top screen. When two units engage in battle, the battle sequence is shown on the top screen. The bottom screen shows a quick summary of the stats of the attacker and defender, including hit percentages. The screens may be swapped via the system menu.
The game includes the Combo Attack system from other SRW games for the Game Boy Advance. Unlike the system in those games, however, the attacker does not need to be parallel with all of the targeted units; instead, when a combo attack is used it will target any adjacent enemies as well, with the maximum number being determined by the pilot's Combo Attack level. In addition, SRWW has the Favorites System from Super Robot Wars MX and J, which grants upgrade and experience growth bonuses to the selected series.
A "Bazaar Shop", similar to the one seen in Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden, is unlocked after beating the game once. The shop allows players to buy a selection of units that, normally, only the enemies would use. These are mainly from the Full Metal Panic series and Gundam SEED.
New to the series is the Double Slot system. When a player goes to the intermission screen (either by completing a stage or loading a saved game) with one of the Game Boy Advance Super Robot Wars games in the DS's GBA slot, they receive a bonus item. The properties of the item vary depending on which game is used.
[edit] Bugs
- The skill Template:Nihongo, granted by the part of the same name, has no effect whatsoever. Weapons which have the same effect works as normal.
- Units with multiple pilots, one of whom has a weaker version of an ability, such as Template:Nihongo, and another of whom has a stronger version of the same ability, such as Template:Nihongo, can be used to generate infinite seishin points. If the player selects one of the abilities with the multi-seishin function, then repeatedly selects and deselects the other ability, the first pilot will gain seishin points each time at no cost to the second. These extra points can go over the pilot's normal maximum. Once 1000 points are reached, the display malfunctions and shows a blank, but the points are still tallied correctly and will display normally if they fall below 1000 again.
- Similarly to the infinite seishin bug, if Kazuma has Template:Nihongo it can be used simultaneously with Akane or Aria's Template:Nihongo to multiply an attack's damage by a total of 5.
