[edit] Gameplay
Unlike traditional fighting games where each player has a certain amount of health points and the battles are fought in an enclosed arena, SSBM is based on knocking each outer out of an arena. The game uses a percent based system instead of a health bar. As you get hit, your percentages go up. As your percentages goes up, the distance you fly (or get knocked back) is further and higher. The objective of the game is to knock your opponent off of the map, either off the sides of the arena, off the map's ceiling in the sky or simply let them fall to their deaths.

From well known characters such as Link, Pikachu and Nintendo's own Italian plumber with a bad accent, Mario, to lesser known character from Nintendo's past such as The Ice Climbers (aka the Parka Twins) and Mr Game and Watch, Nintendo really delivered an variety of character that can relate to the newer generation gamers and the old schoolers.
