This is the story of Yamada Tarou, played by Kazunari Ninomiya, a poor boy with princely qualities. He attends an exclusive private school full of rich students but is himself extremely poor--he lives in a one room house with a huge family that he is basically supporting through part time jobs. Although living in poverty, he is the ideal guy: smart (smartest in school in fact), kind, caring for his family, and, of course, very handsome. Making friends with almost his polar opposite, fellow Arashi member Sho Sakurai. Mimura Takuya (Sakurai) makes Tarou's life more interesting by playfully manipulating him and putting him in humorous situations.
While for the most part it is a family dorama, there is a touch of romance. All girls fancy both Yamada and Mimura at their school but Yamada is oblivious to it while Mimura doesn't give it much notice. However, two girls are actually able to befriend the unlikely pair and romance comes in from all sides--including some unpredictable attraction that made most people quirk an eyebrow in surprise.
A heart-warming dorama that is truly a refreshing break from the tear jerkers abundant now. Full of laughs and memorable moments, Yamada Tarou Monogatari is surely a dorama worth the watch.
